Win TWO tickets to see NWA Roller Derby Burnin’ Love Bout

I love exploring new things. I’ve tried a lot of different activities. I’ve tried soccer, running, bike riding, to Zumba. I liked all the things I’ve tried, but nothing really stuck the way something does when it is the perfect fit. So when I popped in on week 4 of NWA Roller Derby’s fresh meat boot camp, I didn’t expect much.

I knew I wanted to try roller derby since before I had Tobias. I knew I loved to jam skate in junior high. I knew that derby girls seemed kind of rad. What I didn’t know is that I’d meet a group of women who are kindred spirits. I didn’t know I’d find something that not only challenged my body, but challenged my soul. Roller derby has helped me reassign¬†identity to my body. I feel strong and brave and capable. When I passed my skills test to officially be on the league, I puked… I also cried. I cried because the very basis of developing skills in roller derby is about leaning into your own fear and trusting that you CAN do it. I CAN DO IT, and I did.

  1. I think Roller Derby is awesome. A friend of mine has an experience similar to yours. I love it, because in what other community are women free to be strong and kick-ass, while at the same time encouraging and loving towards each other? Good for you, and good luck!

    • Thanks for the comment! I am head over heels in love with derby. Hope those ladies like me, because I am sticking around.

  2. I love Boom Box for her spirit, her tenacity and her amazing can do attitude. She is such a wonderful addition to our league and this planet. Love!

  3. According to the derby name generator, I would be Anne Yeurism or Tainted Halo. I’ve only been to one derby but had a great time!

  4. I am the mother of JoAnn of Arc and have enjoyed the years she has been actively involved in derby! I have seen a major change in her life and health throughout these years and have seen her grow into a responsible adult – taking on many roles within the club and leading with gusto!! Thank you roller derby, for being there to encourage and uplift my daughter, giving her something healthy and worthwhile as she discovered herself and learned to be confident!!!
    GO DERBY!!!!!
